Twenty years after the original Earth Summit, we are still struggling with many of the same sustainability issues in a radically different world. Our world now is dominated by new media, driven by individuals not corporations, where messages travel around the world at lightning speed. The reach of social media and technology enables collaboration at unprecedented levels and gives everyone a voice.

On consumer food waste and sustainability

We waste a lot of food. In some places, we throw away almost as much food as we eat. In developed countries, consumers waste 222 million tons of food every year. That’s the equivalent of 111 million cars or 40 million African elephants. It’s a lot of waste.

To achieve long-term sustainability we need an informed and motivated general public. By making sustainable choices, average citizens can have massive impact on some of the biggest issues plaguing our planet. Our last post focused on changing existing consumer behaviour and some of the ways corporations are working to show consumers how both their purchases and actions can have a positive (or less negative) impact on a sustainable future. An even greater impact could be made by weaving sustainable living into the very fabric of society. And that starts with education.
